The anatomy of the hand is in the spotlight today.

The material I used is as follows:

- 5 straws;
- construction paper sheets;
- A paper plate, a piece of cardboard or Styrofoam tray depending on what you have;
- String;
- A pair of scissors;
- A hot glue gun, but I guess you could use white glue allocating drying time long enough.

I invite you to watch the following short video to show you the movement of a finger.

- 5 pailles;
- une feuille de papier construction;
- une assiette de carton, une morceau de carton ou une assiette de styromousse selon ce que vous avez;
- de la ficelle;
- une paire de ciseau;

Now, here are the steps to take to arrive at this beautiful articulated hand.

1. Depending on whether the children will complete the project or not, children or the teacher will trace the outline of their hand. Once tracing is completed, you will cut it out and paste it on what will be the base.  I recycled a Styrofoam tray.

2. Then to recreate the articulations of each finger (the phalanges), take each straw and cut notches at about  each third.  Basically, you will have to make 2 cuts to recreate the 3 bones of the fingers.  I suggest you look at the following photos to better visualize what to do. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words ;)

3. Once cut, each notches will give you a diamond shape as seen on the pictures. Now is the time to glue the straws on the hand. You MUST glue each straw in the way that the diamond shapes face the top. In this way the fingers can fold and unfold easily.

4. Now cut 5 pieces of string and thread a bead at each end. When you have finished, put each string in each finger, the bead to be at your fingertips

Children are ready to pull the strings one by one or all at once.

Before I take a bow, I cordially invite you to look at my articulated hand model. It has something to tell you...
